What were God's first words to the first sinners? What an ugly title – "sinner." Who wants to wear THAT name tag? Not me. The problem happens to be that this is just how the gospel describes every human being who is a descendant of Adam. OK, I give up. I better line myself up with God’s word and declare myself a sinner.

The beautiful and powerful result when we agree with God's assessment of our condition as sinners is that it opens the door for salvation. Until we can admit (confess) our true condition, from God's point of view, nothing happens. The gospel is of no value to those who have no sin. Only sinners need apply. No use hiding behind fig leaves. God already knows our condition. Why not agree with him? Listen closely and you'll understand why.

"Would you like to 'super-size' that?" What a question! It is an unnecessary question since I have resolved to not let my waistline become super-sized. Here's a whimsical thought: you are about to receive a blessing directly from the hand of God. As you are basking in anticipation, suddenly, you hear a voice from heaven's throne: “One blessing coming up. Would like to super-size that?”

The deeper we get into the gospel it seems that God wants to bless us far beyond our capacity to receive. We find that God wants the dimensions of the blessings that he pours out on us to be supernatural-sized. If we receive a cup, it overflows. If we receive peace, it surpasses understanding. If we receive water, it is a river. If we receive life, it never ends. Listen closely and check out this supernatural-sized prayer in God's word.

Why pray? If God is all-powerful why does he need people to pray? God does not need us to pray as much as we NEED to pray. God's first words to the first sinners were, "Where are you?" Of course God knew where they were, but the question served notice that sin had caused separation. Since that time God has condescended to use human beings to bridge the gap that still exists because of sin.

Why pray? God has invested power in his people. In his wisdom he has planted a praying people on this earth. God allows us to have a share in the responsibility and stewardship to bring his redemptive power to bear in our world. The power that created the universe is as close to us as a quiet whisper or a silent moment on our knees. Why pray? Why not pray?

Marriage between man and wife is the oldest institution in human history. God himself was the first minister and the heavenly angels were the first witnesses. Adam and Eve were joined together by the hand of God. What God has joined together, let not man separate.

Unfortunately, the world is in a struggle to keep to adhere to this godly concept of marriage. God's plan for his creation has not ceased. Marriage is still GOD'S institution. The more we know of his plan the more we will be willing to submit to his will. Our lives and the life of our civilization will prosper. Despite the current trend, the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman is still God's reality. Anything less is inviting disaster.

People have questions. People have minds. God is not offended. He created us for just these things. Some skeptics mischaracterize Christians as people who have been coerced by a vengeful God to abandon reason. I don't recall getting a lobotomy when I said "Yes" to the gospel. I do recall entering into a relationship with God through the redemption made possible by Jesus Christ.

Some skeptics have overlooked the fact that attitude plays a role in how people come to terms with the biblical concept of God. A case in point was in how Jesus responded to the woman at the well in John, chapter four. He opened up the windows of heaven for her. In contrast, Herod plied Jesus with many questions, but he gave him no answer. The woman at the well is now remembered forever. Herod has disappeared from history. Attitude matters.

Evolutionary biologists claim that human beings are mere animals. Therefore, love is just a survival tactic passed down through our DNA. However, we believe God has a better idea. He has decided to bypass our DNA and go directly to a very unique factor that is missing in the animal kingdom. God addresses us in our capacity to make decisions. He addresses the human will.

Through the gospel we can now have right relationship to God through Jesus Christ. We still have free will, but our will is tied directly to God through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is with this new nature in mind that Jesus can now give us the 11th Commandment: "A new command I give you: Love one another."
It is our ability to respond to this command that separates us from the animals.

Every year Lucy promises to hold the football for Charlie Brown. He knows full well, based on past experience, that on a dead run, just as he thrusts his foot at the ball, Lucy will yank it out of the way sending him flying through the air to land on his back with a THUMP! Lucy promises this time will be different. Charlie Brown believes her. He runs full blast at the ball and ends up flat on his back –THUMP! Lucy stands over him and says, "Your faith in human nature is an inspiration to all young people."

We believers have a human nature that is like a "Lucy" inside of us that betrays a Charlie Brown-like trust. "I know I'll do better next time," we promise ourselves. Suddenly, we lose our footing – THUMP! How can we win this war within us?

We are told in Ephesians 4:1 to walk worthy of the calling we have received. We have all felt the pressure to walk in a worthy manner. In times of failure we can hear the familiar refrain coming directly from our conscience: "And you call yourself a Christian?!"

The reason we can be given such an exhortation, in Ephesians 4:1, is because of what God's word has revealed to us in the first three chapters of Ephesians. Without the first three chapters of Ephesians the exhortation in the fourth chapter would be impossible. The more we know who we are in Christ the more power we will have to live the way God intends. In times of failure when that same old tape plays in our minds – "And you call yourself a Christian?!" – We'll have an answer ready: "No. That's what God calls me."

Jesus has a way of commanding the utmost in devotion. We may start off with little steps toward a life of commitment only to find ourselves more deeply involved that we ever anticipated. As we ponder the reasons for our devotion, we discover that it is usually in response to what God has already done in our lives. We discover that, as our devotion expands, it is because God's influence has already laid claim to a larger part of our hearts. We respond with greater devotion.

Devotion to Jesus is often misunderstood. Those who stand by (by-standers) will not understand the reason behind deep displays of devotion. Jesus was devoted to us and it led him to the cross. People on the receiving end of such devotion and sacrifice can hardly just stand by (remain by-standers). Devotion is an appropriate response. Jesus is worthy.

The miracle of God's arithmetic is that he does not add and subtract using the same rules we do. God adds by subtracting and multiplies by dividing. In fact, from a human point of view, it could be said that God broke every rule known to science by creating the universe: he made something come from nothing. That's impossible! That's God's arithmetic!

The disciples had a front row seat as they witnessed the miracle of God's arithmetic when Jesus fed the multitude with a few loaves and fishes. What can God do with our lives as we yield to him? Let God's arithmetic add to your life today. Put your life in his hands.

A little boy was struggling during a Sunday school class in his efforts to draw a picture of Jesus. As much as he would try, he couldn’t quite get his drawing as perfect as he would have liked. The teacher tried to encourage the young artist, but he shouted out in frustration, “I can’t do it! All I can draw is the halo!”

How many of us have experienced the frustration of knowing we should be exhibiting the qualities of Jesus in our lives, yet we continually fall short. All we can get is the halo. In other words, we know that Jesus is holy and loving, but WE sure are not. And his halo haunts us. Paul wrote a letter to a church that was struggling to live up to the halo of Jesus. Let the "love chapter" give you encouragement today.

Series: Sermon on the Mount
The Sermon on the Mount began on a promising note: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." To be poor in spirit is to be able to admit that you cannot measure up to God's standards. You admit your poverty of spirit and your need of salvation. Those rich in spirit have no need of salvation.

Jesus ended the Sermon on the Mount giving us a portrayal of the final outcome of these two people. One was the wise man who built his house on the rock. The other was the foolish man who built his house on sand. Only one of them can be declared "blessed." The choice is still open today. Jesus is the Rock and his is calling all people to himself so that he can call them "blessed." Let Jesus be your Rock.

Some Pharisees asked Jesus about marriage. He referred his questioners back to creation:

"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate" (Matthew 19:4-6).

Jesus gave explicit instructions that we were not to separate what God has joined together. We live in an age of confusion about the institution of marriage. When the basic foundation of marriage is lost we will lose the basic foundation of civilization. For a donation to the ministry of Christian Life Tools you will be sent an audio CD entitled "The Sanctity of Marriage." This is a 45 minute sermon based on the text of Matthew 19.
