Series: Sermon on the Mount
A judgmental attitude might be one of the most unattractive character traits that anyone could possess. Judgmental people will find themselves at the losing end in the voting for "Miss/Mr. Congeniality." Jesus said, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Even unbelievers know this Bible verse.<br><br>In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives us a big lesson as to what his prohibition of judging actually means. The prohibition stems largely from the fact that we are in no position to be anyone's judge. It is very likely that whatever we might be judging someone for, we may be guilty of the same thing in some other way. Is there a correct way to judge? Jesus tells us to first address the huge chunk of wood in our own eye before we begin to address the little speck of sawdust in the eyes of others.

Series: Sermon on the Mount
Why worry? We can worry about the unknown. What will tomorrow bring? I know... more worry! There is cause to worry or no cause to worry. Either way we will worry. We can have a worried look or a worried posture. We can be weighed down by worry. We can worry to the point of making ourselves sick. Maybe that's the secret: worry is an inside job.<br><br>The Sermon on the Mount begins with eight declarations that those who belong to God, through the sacrifice of Christ, are "blessed." To be blessed means that we are holy and called out of this world. We belong to God as his exclusive property. We must learn to obey the voice of our King when he tells us: "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well."

Once we have entered into relationship to God through Jesus Christ, we can then be tutored in how to live. We are not told how to live in order to enter heaven, but we begin to be trained as those who already belong to heaven as God's children. This is the difference between the "bad-spel" (bad news) of the human ability to please God on our own and the "gospel" (good news) of God providing the way for us himself. Let's opt for the good news.<br><br>
Jesus tells us to avoid storing up for ourselves treasures on earth, but rather, store up for ourselves treasures in heaven. The idea of "storing up" implies that we might be consumed with either serving the world and its ways, or God and his ways. Jesus said that we cannot serve two masters. Listen closely and you'll understand.

The beauty of The Lord's Prayer is that it is really meant for us. Jesus doesn't need The Lord's Prayer. We do. The power of The Lord's Prayer is that it is based on the privilege of relationship. Who can say "Our Father?" Only those who belong to the Father through the atoning sacrifice of the Son can say, "Our Father." We can take strength in our God-given relationship, along with the confidence the Son of God has given to us, and then begin a life of prayer.<br><br>
How is your prayer life? A good study of The Lord's Prayer may just be the bolt of divine lightning needed to fire up a healthy life of prayer.

Religion tends to address things on the outside, but leave the heart alone. God wants our hearts. We are to reflect the image of God.<br><br>
Jesus is concerned with our speech that it be simply truthful. Truth is an attribute of God and should be an attribute of God's people. Also, Jesus wants us to be free from retaliation and revenge. We must be willing to forgive just as God has forgiven us. Jesus takes this to a completely unnatural level as we are called to love our enemies. Eventually, we must go as far as to not let our right hand know what our left hand is doing as we attempt to do good deeds. That is, we are to do what God demands and leave it at that. What's this all about? Listen and you'll see.

People may wonder what God's purpose and plan for this world might be. All anyone would have to do is take a few moments and carefully read this great teaching in God's word called "The Sermon on the Mount" and the mystery would be solved. The windows of heaven will be opened.<br><br>
Jesus included teaching on divorce and his teaching is very strict. Divorce is not the unforgiveable sin, but we must understand the covenant of marriage to better understand why Jesus would set such a high standard regarding divorce. The current social climate in our nation is becoming less and less marriage-friendly. We not only have to live in this culture, but we also have to live with our fallen nature. All the more reason to listen closely to what Jesus would have to say about the nature of marriage.

Jesus laid out the plan of God for his people. It involved principles that would not only reflect the holiness of God, but also it would also be in the best interest of God's people as well. What lies at the center of the Law is love. Love does what love does best: it looks out for the interests of the beloved.<br><br>
Jesus told us that it is wrong to commit adultery and took the Law to the very core of our being. "...anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Yes, the heart of the Law is love, but the heart of the Law is also our hearts. Jesus has his sights set on our hearts. Only Jesus can transform the heart. Give it to him.

Jesus reminds us that murder is against the law of God. He went on to state that just being innocent of murder is no reason for people to think that they are innocent before God. Jesus said that we can murder people in our hearts by harboring ungodly attitudes toward them. Since this is true, we had all better fall on the mercy of God and seek him for a clean heart.<br><br>
To live in the constant unrepentant state of "heart murder" is evidence that a person may not belong to God. Living in this state is to risk facing the judgment of God. Jesus sees it this way: "I tell you the truth, you will not [escape] until you pay the last penny." And this is a price no one can afford to pay.

Not only will we all die one day, but the world, (as we know it), will one day disappear. Many people want to "go green." We must save the planet. As healthy as it is to be a good steward over the God's creation, it is healthier to be a good steward over the message of God that supersedes all of creation. Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of the pen, will by any means disappear from the law until everything is accomplished."<br><br>
If people really want to "go green" they should adhere to the message in God's word. Those who are interested in a "green" message, this is it: "Go green! Put your trust in Jesus Christ!" It gets no greener than the gift of eternal life.

Immediately following the Beatitudes, Jesus looks us all straight in the eyes and proclaims without flinching, "You are the salt of the earth! You are the light of the world!" I know that when I look at myself in the mirror that's the last thing that comes to my mind.<br><br>
We must know who we are in Christ before we can move out in his power. The missing ingredient in many believers is that they have refused the mantle of discipleship. Jesus gave us the definition of discipleship in Matthew 28. It is learning how to obey. How simple! We must learn what Jesus meant by his description of us in the Sermon on the Mount and then agree to grow into it. The question remains: who will act on their faith? The world is waiting.

The Beatitudes have a God-ordained symmetry that reflect the glory and wisdom of the gospel. The first four Beatitudes represent the need inherent in all who bow the knee to Jesus. They are poor in spirit. They mourn over sin. They show meekness of obedience and have a hunger and thirst for righteousness.<br><br>
The last four Beatitudes represent believers who have been filled according to their need. Now they may move out in power. They are merciful. They are pure in heart. They are peacemakers and they are able to withstand persecution in the process. All believers share these traits. When we are challenged and find that we have fallen short, God will again fill us as we confess our need of him. The world needs the gospel. God has ordained both message and messenger. Who is willing to be that person?

The last four beatitudes describe people who have been filled. Their need has been met and they can now go out in power. They are merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers and are able to withstand persecution.<br><br>
Today's message will focus on the peacemaker. We will find that the peacemaker must sometimes disturb the peace. Jesus crossed into enemy territory to bring peace. He purchased our peace on the cross. An apt description of those who belong to the kingdom of God are those people who will cross over into enemy territory to bring peace. By doing so, they will be reflecting the character of their Father in heaven in much the same way as did Jesus. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the sons of God."

Some Pharisees asked Jesus about marriage. He referred his questioners back to creation:
<br><br>
"Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate" (Matthew 19:4-6).
<br><br>
Jesus gave explicit instructions that we were not to separate what God has joined together. We live in an age of confusion about the institution of marriage. When the basic foundation of marriage is lost we will lose the basic foundation of civilization. For a donation to the ministry of Christian Life Tools you will be sent an audio CD entitled "The Sanctity of Marriage." This is a 45 minute sermon based on the text of Matthew 19.
