Series: Paul, From Sinner To Saint
In this final lecture, Dr. Creasy moves on to second Timothy, the letter Paul writes from death row at the Mamertine Prison in Rome. Paul knows that the end has come, that he has "finished the race," and he prepares to pass the baton to Timothy. Second Timothy is bittersweet; it is Paul's last will and testament, and it is a farewell to his young protégé, a young man who after eighteen years had become became Paul's "dear son."

In the Hebrew Scriptures, God gives the message of the Law through Moses, and in the Greek Scriptures, God gives the message of Grace through Paul. In Scripture, Moses and Paul are parallel characters. In the same way, Joshua and Timothy are parallel characters: both take over the ministries of their mentors - Joshua replaces Moses and Timothy replaces Paul. In this lecture, Dr. Creasy examines the relationship between Paul and Timothy, tracing how their relationship develops and how Paul grooms Timothy for leadership.

Paul writes to the church at Colossae, but in fact, Paul had never been to Colossae! So, who founded the church and why is Paul writing to it? Dr. Creasy solves the mystery, and he also explores four dangers the church in Colossae faces. Paul then writes a personal letter to a man named Philemon, a resident of Colossae and a member of the church that meets at Philemon's house. Paul's letter to Philemon is a masterpiece of persuasion: it is Paul at his rhetorical best.

In this epistle Paul addresses the church at Ephesus. Perhaps the most successful church that Paul founded, the people at Ephesus are educated, sophisticated, and urbane, and Paul writes his epistle for such an audience: Ephesians is a dazzling display of rhetorical fireworks! In this lecture, Dr. Creasy examines the epistle's opening two sentences, the first, a 30-word introduction, and the second, a 202-word sentence with six levels of parallel subordination, each element of the sentence linked together with a repetition of vowel and consonant sounds. And the content? One could easily write an entire theological library based on this one sentence! This is Paul at his best.

After dealing with the problems brought to him by "Chloe's household," Paul addresses the "spiritual gifts" that the Corinthians have been boasting about, pointing out that they are acting like big babies! After sending this first epistle to Corinth, Paul has second thoughts about what he has written, so he follows his first epistle with a second one in which he attempts to reconcile himself with the church. Before long, though, Paul is defending himself against scurrilous charges from some people in Corinth: that Paul is not an apostle, and that he is dishonest!

Shortly after Paul reaches Ephesus in A.D. 54, a delegation from Corinth arrives with bad news. The church in Corinth faces a mountain of problems: factions and divisions have developed; there is rampant sexual immorality in the church; believers are suing one another in the secular courts. And the list goes on and on. In no mood to be gentle, Paul dashes off a scathing epistle, telling the people in Corinth to "grow up!" Open your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 1:1 as Paul "chews out" the church!

Once Paul states his thesis, he then goes on to support it in a variety of ways. First, Paul demonstrates his thesis by antithesis; then he restates it, lest we forget. Next, Paul demonstrates his thesis by example, using Abraham, and then he shines a light on the thesis and illuminates it. Finally, Paul anticipates our objections to his thesis and answers each one, in turn.

Although not the first epistle Paul writes, Romans takes first position among Paul's writings in importance. Structured as a "scholastic diatribe," Romans is a formal argument that supports Paul's thesis of "salvation by grace through faith." When Paul leaves Ephesus he is accompanied by a mounting dread that when he arrives in Jerusalem he will be killed. Yet, he insists on going. Shortly after he arrives in Jerusalem a riot breaks out at the temple and Paul is beaten by the mob, being snatched from death only when the Roman military arrests him and accuses him of being a terrorist! Paul's arrest lands him in a web of legal proceedings that takes him to Caesarea, where he spends two years awaiting transportation to Rome and a hearing before Caesar himself.

After returning to Antioch, Paul quickly repacks and heads through the interior to Ephesus, the major port on the west coast of Asia Minor. A large city of two to three hundred thousand people, Ephesus is wealthy and sophisticated. It includes a large theater seating 25,000 people and it is the home of the Temple of Diana, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. When Paul passed through Ephesus on his return trip from the second missionary journey, he realized its enormous potential as headquarters for a missionary outreach into all of Asia Minor. Paul spends nearly three years in Ephesus, and when he concludes his work he can rightfully say, "all of Asia Minor had heard the gospel."

Having barely escaped Berea with his life, Paul makes his way to Athens and Corinth. In Athens, Paul is invited to speak at the Areopagus, the "faculty club" of Athens, with little success. He then moves on to Corinth, a double-seaport town and the home of the Temple of Aphrodite, the goddess of erotic love. Paul spends eighteen months in Corinth, establishes a church there, and later writes two epistles to the church. Full of factions and divisions, the Church at Corinth is nothing but trouble for Paul, and his relationship with the Church at Corinth is troubled, at best.

Although Mark had deserted them on the first missionary journey, Barnabas wants to give him a second chance, but Paul refuses. With gentiles now entering the church in large numbers, a serious question arises: "Can a gentile become a follower of the Jewish messiah apart from observing the Mosaic law, including being circumcised and following Jewish dietary laws?" As we join Dr. Creasy today, the church stands at a crossroad: will it continue as just another reform movement within Judaism, or will it step out into the world and take on a life of its own, apart from Judaism?

Last time we left Saul of Tarsus standing at the head of a mob, giving approval to Stephen's death. Not an innocent bystander or a passive participant, Saul oversaw the stoning of Stephen, which triggers a great persecution against the Church in Jerusalem - a persecution led by Saul. Receiving letters of introduction to the synagogues in Damascus from the high priest himself, Saul, "breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples," makes his way north, intent on rounding up any believers he can find. On the road to Damascus, everything changes when Saul encounters the risen and glorified Christ.

Host: Dr. Bill Creasy
Series: Paul, From Sinner To Saint
In Lecture #1 we witnessed the birth of the Church, and we saw it growing rapidly from 12 to 120 to 3,000 to 5,000 and more believers. Persecution quickly followed. This radical new movement posed a threat, not only to the Jewish leadership, but also to the very existence of the Jewish nation. As we enter our story today in Lecture #2, Peter and John are arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin. Join Dr. Creasy as we open our Bibles to Acts 4:1 and step into "the gathering storm" . . .

Series: Paul, From Sinner To Saint
Paul dominates in the New Testament. Thirteen of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are attributed to him, and during three missionary journeys, he managed to evangelize all of Asia Minor and a major part of Europe. Today Paul is viewed as the apostle who worked tirelessly to spread the gospel in the ancient world. In this first lecture we witness "The Birth of the Church," beginning with Jesus' ascension into heaven, the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Jewish feast of Pentecost, and the Church's extraordinary growth during its first weeks and months.

As we teach verse-by-verse through the Bible, difficult issues invariably arise. In today's political and social climate, homosexuality is one of the most volatile of these issues. I have been asked frequently what the Bible says about homosexuality, and I've usually side-stepped the question, not because it's too hot to handle, but because it is a complex topic and I want to
offer a thoughtful, comprehensive response. I'd like to take this opportunity to do so.
