Anyone who's ever had to battle a large bureaucracy will know how tiring it is. And it's such a waste of energy. So – as our church grows, the question is how do we stop it from becoming a bureaucracy – this beast that we have to battle with. Because the sad thing is, if that happens, eventually, people give up!

In any community – any church for that matter – there are going to be some people that we get on with and others who are more at a distance. That's pretty natural really. Question is – whether we have that handful of close friends, loving relationships … people we can trust and rely on? That's the question.

One of the easiest things in the world is for a church, to become a club. For this God-ordained lifesaving station to turn into an exclusive club for the members. We get so comfortable, we stop seeing the hurts and the needs of the people just outside the front door. Our neighbours. Our work colleagues. Easiest thing in the world actually.

In a world where so many people are so busy – they feel almost like, like battery hens. Trudging off to the same job, day after day. Pressures. Deadlines. Performance targets. And what they're looking for – more than anything else often – is a genuine sense of community. Question is – where do you find that these days?

Different churches different styles of worship service. Some really contemporary. Some more traditional. But irrespective of the style, there something else. Irrespective of the style, people can tell the difference between a worship service that's inspiring and one that's not. Sometimes, there’s something missing...

Many an organisation has been consumed by its own bureaucracy. It grows and then there are committees and dysfunctional management structures and before you know it, it topples over. Well – churches are no different. Unless we manage growth and structures … we end up nowhere.

I remember being part of a football team once … and we didn't win a game all season. Can I tell you – morale at training and on the weekend was really low. We were … well, losers. And you know sadly – I've walked into many a church that's flat, lifeless. Dead. There's no spark, no fire. Why is that?

There's nothing worse than being a square peg in a round hole. And in this thing called church – that should never, ever be the case. God's made us a certain way, to do certain things. And in a church those gifts should be put to use for God and for others. Simple really. So … how come it doesn't always work like that?

We've all seen different styles of leadership in our day. Some good. Some not so good. And some … downright awful. We see it in the workplace. We see it in community groups. And we see it in churches. So – what sort of leadership should we be finding in our local church?

Different churches have all sorts of different focuses. Some focus more on social justice things. Others on developing those in the church. Others on evangelism. And all that's great. But unless there's a sense of the lordship of Christ amongst the people … then the church isn't even a church.

Jesus once told His disciples that His plan for them was to become fishers of men – of people. And then, then He proceeded to turn their worlds upside down – in showing them how. I wonder how welcome that kind of radical Jesus would be, in the odd church around the place today.

In that wonderful British comedy "Yes Prime Minister" a wise old civil servant said to a junior one – "Remember, politicians love activity – it's their substitute for achievement." You know – I wonder, I wonder if that doesn't apply to a few churches around the place. We busy ourselves with activity – but does it have any real impact?

By and large the only real problem I've ever found with church – is the other people. If it weren't for them, church would be a delight. Really. No arguments. No different opinions. No different theologies. Yep – pretty much – I've come to the conclusion that church would be just fantastic, without all those other people!

The easiest thing to do is to snipe at this thing they call church form the outside. And, if the truth be known, a whole bunch of people are prone to sniping at it from the inside too. They're the ones, who, instead of putting their roots down into the fertile soil of community – well, they're like "pot bound" Christians.

This thing called church is a strange sort of an animal. What it is – or at least the way we see it – has changed a bit over the years. And whilst sometimes we might think of it as a building or an institution – it's really neither of those things. It's a community. And community requires commitment.

We don't have to look too far back to see how over the years, authority in the church has been abused. And so many people today – well, we're a tad suspicious about authority. And so we toddle along to church – as semi-interested volunteers. But that doesn't seem to be the answer either.

We're all too ready to judge a book by its cover. It's true of people … and it's true of churches. And whilst there are many different styles and approaches to church – we fit into some better than others – it's not just the cover that matters. It's the book, the substance … what lies beneath the surface that matters most.

There is such an incredibly rich diversity across this thing called 'church.' So many different approaches and styles. That's OK. But some churches – they're comfortable places to be but they don't achieve much. Others, they get a lot done, but they're so demanding. Why is that?

Let's face it – from a marketing perspective the thing they call 'church' – well, it doesn't exactly have a rosy reputation does it? Really. In fact on some quarters 'church' has become a four letter word. S0 – was church really God's idea, and if so – what was He thinking?
