Karen's father is an alcoholic who beats her mother. He abandons them when she's four, and she spends her life longing for a reconciliation. He wants nothing to do with them even when he's dying. Karen's grandmother loves the Lord and takes her to church, but Karen becomes an alcoholic during a first, failed marriage. She weds Bud and they adopt children. Working at a crisis pregnancy center, Karen gets saved but her addiction ends only when she surrenders to Christ six months later. By phone, she leads her father in a prayer of salvation. Still at the pregnancy center.

Growing up, Jerry comes between his stepdad and Mom when they fight. He becomes a brawler as a teenager, drinking, crashing his car while drunk. He plays the bass guitar in a small band, wants to be a rock star and writes songs. Looking for lyrics, he searches the Bible, then reads Revelation and is scared. He quits drinking, reads the Bible and goes to a coworker's church, where he is saved. He becomes a soul-winner and goes to Bible college. On a trip home, his mother confesses that she tried to abort him. Now a pastor.

His alcoholic mother abandons the family when Bruce is eight, and his dad puts him in an orphanage for two years. Bruce has a speech problem. When he goes home, his sister and he break into churches. He goes to juvenile lockup till he's 16, where he learns to work hard. Back home he marries reluctantly at 21. His wife and he pray for salvation; but when their marriage breaks up because of her infidelity, Bruce swallows drain cleaner. His life is spared but he loses his stomach and esophagus. He consumes alcohol in his feeding tube. Finally, he returns to Christ and ministers to other addicts.

Fenton is adopted from an orphanage at age four. His new dad abandons them when Fenton is 11. He fails two grades: first and fourth, but he's saved at camp when he's 17. He serves the Lord eagerly. After the army he marries Carol. They go to Bible college, have two children, and he teaches and stays busy in Christian service. His daughter goes bad, using drugs, having babies out of wedlock. Fenton resigns from the pastorate but becomes a chaplain. Despite their children's rejection of Christ, they remain faithful.

Disillusioned with religion, Steve becomes an atheist. He has adventures in Alaska, returns home with wife, Nancy, and they have a daughter. After Nancy is saved, he decides to leave but her pastor interrupts his plans. Nancy has a dream about an earthquake and they leave home for a retreat. On the way a pastor travels with him, sharing the gospel. Steve resists. But at the retreat he prays for salvation, an insincere prayer. On the third day he yields to Christ, an earthquake in his heart. Both are still in ministry.

An only child, Nancy's dad commits suicide months after she marries Steve. They are in Alaska as teachers. She has stomach pains and fears death, especially after she has several dreams. Desperately, she prays, and  has another dream after which her pain disappears. Wanting to learn God's name, Nancy studies all the religions, but none of them have a God who talks to His people. They go home where a woman suggests she read the Psalms. She discovers a God who talks to people. In another dream her life is in danger, and she calls every god she can remember to save her. When she calls on Jesus, she is saved. The first part ends as Steve prepares to leave because of her faith.

Drinking is prevalent in Mark's  his family of nine children; talking isn't. When Mark uses his dad's van without permission, his older brother to beat him up. Mark drinks too much and drives his snowmobile into a semi-truck, nearly dying. After recovering he goes back to drinking, his mother uses tough love and he goes to rehab in Chicago. There he prays and meets Jesus people who lead him to Christ. He agonizes about turning in his brother to police for car theft but does. He learns to talk about Jesus, goes to Bible college and marries Julie. Now in ministry.

Penny is born prematurely but survives only to suffer double pneumonia at six. The family suffers through the Depression but Penny goes to Bible college where she meets George. They marry, graduate and go into ministry. Four children are born, but the youngest is murdered at 19. After George dies in 1989, Penny serves with missionaries in Mexico. James Wilkins comes to speak and she prays for their marriage. She nearly dies in a car accident with her sister but survives and continues to pray for James. They marry in 1996, and now serve the Lord in ministry and writing books.

After his father dies, James' mother goes to a nearby church. James goes, then quits, then returns and is saved. He begins witnessing to his family, and a brother is saved. But his brother switches churches, saying the nearby one is flawed. Ultimately, James agrees and goes to his brother's church where he surrenders to ministry. Before his mother dies she reveals her abortion attempt, and James struggles to deal with this new revelation. James discovers his birth certificate that says, 'Infant Wilkins.'  He now serves in ministry, and has published books including <I>Survivor</I>.

James admits his crimes to the parole board and serves three years of a 16-year-sentence. He reconciles with his mother, works for a non-profit ministry and is promoted several times; but his church doesn't welcome him so he reaches out to them. He gets a B.A. degree but his board won't ordain him. He gets an M.B.A degree and serves with the ministry that helped him in prison. Today he's a chaplain, married and the Director of Correctional Services for the State of Texas.

His parents divorce when James is five and he never sees his father again. Feeling that his mother has rejected him, he turns to drugs and gangs. His mother takes him to a Curandero, a witch doctor but James gets addicted to heroin, burglarizing houses to support his habit. Violence reigns. His mother keeps him out of prison when he's 17, but after more crimes, James goes to prison at 21. During his second term, he read the Bible to impress the parole board but discovers the love of God and is saved as the first part ends.
