Series: Hope For Our Troubled Times
Let's stop and take an honest inventory of our times. Not only will this enable us to see where we find ourselves, spiritually speaking, but it will help us understand how to apply the apostle John's mysterious statement: "many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18). When pondering those words in light of today, it becomes obvious that such a statement is incredibly insightful. We can begin to see more clearly the disturbing realities of our times and, with hope, navigate our way through the cultural maze of humanism, skepticism, and postmodernism.

Series: How Great Is Our God!
What comes to your mind when you think about God? Whatever those thoughts are, one thing is true: they say more about you than they do about God. Fashionable thinking today - in a society that no longer receives its cues from the Scripture -
wants a god who is predictable, not one of mystery. We want a god who is comfortable, not one who makes us shudder. We want a god who is a little holier than us but not too holy. In short, we want a god like us . . . only better. How foul such thoughts are, for our God is none of these things. In His unique otherness, our God is the
measure of all things. And in the beauty of His holiness, we see the ugliness of our wretchedness, yet we also find the encouragement to be holy as He is.

If the human race were suddenly struck blind, the sun would continue to shine by day and the moon by night. If we were suddenly struck deaf, birds would continue to sing and brooks to babble. And if we were suddenly struck with the "disease" of
atheism, God would continue to exist in His resplendent glory. Our belief or disbelief in God adds nothing to nor takes anything away from His glory, anymore than our sight or hearing commands the sun and the birds. But if we were suddenly struck by disobedience and self-conceit to steal God's glory, even then He would remain undiminished. God's glory is His and His alone, and with no other does He share it.

We are all disabled spiritually. Compared to God's perfection, everyone of us is misshapen and in need of special attention. Coming to terms with this truth, really grasping it, will change your life forever. It will give you a spirit of brokenness and a deeper compassion for those who live with lifelong physical and mental disabilities. Chuck Swindoll's daughther Colleen deeply understands the struggles of special-needs families because she has one. Ministering to families with special needs takes more than compassion. Though that is the place to start, it also takes information, information Colleen shares in this interview.

Peter was not one to quote pious platitudes; he had lived too long and seen too much. So we should pay careful attention to what Peter wrote - especially when life seems to be passing us through fiery trials. Peter lived during the days when being a Christian could cost you your life; therefore, the truths he offered should help us get through the fire of affliction we can experience in our own lives.

In an age such as ours - where emphasis is placed on self-promotion and polishing our image, when looking good is more important than being good, when making an impression is more important than integrity - who has time for submission, humility, dependence, and trust? But if we crave relief from dissatisfaction, there is a "formula" in the New Testament that will give us that relief.

Humanity has questioned God's goodness for millennia, especially in the face of evil
and suffering. "Why would a good God allow the Hebrews to remain in Egyptian bondage for more than 400 years?" "Why would a loving God order the destruction of the Canaanites when Joshua led troops into the Promised Land?" "How could a
holy God call the adulterous David a man after His own heart?" And "How could a compassionate God allow righteous Job to suffer?" Job gives us insight into that question and teaches us seven truths about our God.

At the most basic level, the Bible has two purposes: first, to teach us truths about our
God, and second, to teach us truths about ourselves. Truths, oftentimes, are hard to face, especially truths about ourselves - but face them we must. Knowing the truth about ourselves is particularly important when the bottom drops out of life. And because God chose to preserve the story of Job, we, thankfully, have a good teacher to teach us seven vital lessons.

The Bible is full of mysteries: the "mystery" God revealed to Daniel (Daniel 2:17-19); the "mystery" of God's hidden wisdom (1 Corinthians 2:6-8); the "mystery" of future events (1 Corinthians 15:51-52); the "mystery of His will" (Ephesians 1:9); the "great mystery" of Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:32 NLT); the "mystery of lawlessness" currently at work (2 Thessalonians 2:7). And though it isn't specifically called one in the Bible, suffering is indeed a profound mystery. Paul's words will help us unravel the mysterious subject of suffering.

This is a delicate subject, unfamiliar to many and even frightening to a few; however, it's a subject we dare not ignore or overlook. It is the world of physical, mental, and emotional challenges and disabilities . . . a world where millions of men and women, boys and girls, parents and grandparents live their lives. Nevertheless, it is also a world many fail to acknowledge, appreciate, and respect . . . unlike the Creator of bodies and brains - the Lord our God.

In the tapestry of God's creation, He has crafted each one of us as a unique individual,
an absolute masterpiece from the hand of the Creator. Or as David put it, "I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:14). Many in our "it's-all-about-me" society believe they are wonderfully put together, but they certainly don't think those with special needs are masterpieces from God's hand. In fact, many of the "wonderful" people secretly think that God made a mistake in creating boys and girls, men and
women, with special needs. Colleen Swindoll rejects that idea. The special people who
have special needs, like her son, Jonathan, are works of art from the Master Artist.

Enoch. Moses. Caleb. Paul. When we think about these men, we recall how they lived fully and finished well. We remember them for their faithfulness to God, but how did they remain faithful? What makes a person walk with God for three hundred years or do his best work in the last decades of his life? We attain some insight into these questions in the final verses of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, where he provided four guidelines for finishing well.

When we come to a passage such as Ephesians 6:13-20, our tendency is to think that we need to be strong in ourselves, that we need to get ourselves in shape for the battle. Wrong. We are actually mere sheep - we can't fight, we don't run very fast, and we don't come across as very menacing to our enemies. And it is precisely because we are sheep that God's armor is so important in our lives. He provides us access to His armor that we might have a chance of success in the battle against evil.

It's a tragedy to live in fear of our world. We're apprehensive about violence in our neighborhoods, drugs in our schools, or sexual images plastered on billboards, but we don't know where to turn or what to do. And we have to send our kids into this culture!

Unfortunately, much in our world-and even in the church-has gone astray, serving only to confuse people about Christianity rather than lead them to the Truth.

In this series, Chuck Swindoll speaks directly about our times, charting a clear path through the troubling changes and disturbing realities that plague our days. With biblical insight and practical wisdom, Hope for Our Troubled Times will guide us and our families through the most challenging issues of our day. We need not fear the world we live in. Drawing from the apostle Paul's example of how he accepted his own weaknesses and hardships, Chuck Swindoll reminds us of what we often don't want to hear: our life on earth is for the purpose of making us more like Christ. Unfortunately, nothing does that better than the trials and pains we suffer. But if we, like Paul, can keep our eyes on the ultimate goal of letting God work through us, we'll learn to accept joyfully whatever God brings us and not seek the easy, pain-free life instead.
