Fox News analyst, Britt Hume, recently said, "The most controversial two words you can ever utter in a public space are 'Jesus Christ.' When he further indicated that there is forgiveness and redemption in the Christian faith that could not be found in another religion, a firestorm of criticism came from the media.
When asked to speculate about the reasons for the mainstream media's negative attitude toward Christianity he said, "I think it is true that for people who are not Christian, Christianity makes a fairly extravagant claim which is that the Son of God -- God made Flesh -- came into this world, lived, suffered terribly, and died for the remission of our sins, and then rose again. This is a huge supernatural event, and a lot of people don't—have a lot of trouble believing it. But if you do purport to believe it, the implications are pretty staggering. And the result is you may end up talking about it."

For many years we have introduced our broadcast with an invitation to "stay tuned for another message of God's sovereign grace."
Actually, saying "sovereign grace" is like saying "wet water." Grace is dispensed from the hand of our sovereign God and He bestows it according to His good pleasure. The word itself conveys the thought that it is not something which can be merited but is a blessing given according to His will and purpose.
In today's message we cite biblical reasons for declaring that it is sovereign grace which is given of God. The text is Ephesians 2:4-9.

"For if any be a hearer of the Word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in as glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was." James 1:23-24
As we begin this new year, it is a good time to be looking intently into the mirror of God's Word.
As you look, you are shown what you are by nature -- a sinner in need of grace through Christ Jesus.
Second, God's Word shows you what you ought to be — one who loves and obeys God. The first commandment, according to Jesus, is to love the one true God with all your heart, soul, strength, and might.
And third it shows you what you can be. Though you may be discouraged by failures of the past, you can find hope of victory in the days ahead by full dependence on Jesus Christ the author and finisher of your faith.

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:10-11
In the troubled world in which we live there seems to be little good news. But 2,000 years ago an angel appeared and declared I am bringing good tidings, good news; and that news is still good news today. A Savior was born who is Immanuel--God with us--Jesus Christ our Lord.
Fallen man desperately needed a savior. Because of his sinful state he could not save himself or even assist in his own salvation. He was incapable of making things right with God. But Jesus Christ came to do what man could not do for himself, He came to save His people from the sins. He died for sinners, He redeemed them; by His redemptive work their sin is put away. What good news!

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me... I go to prepare a place for you..." John 14:1-3
First we find in this passage a loving admonition. Jesus knew that trouble is part of life, but a troubled heart dishonors God. Specifically Jesus is preparing his disciples for what is coming -- He will be crucified and they will pass through great sorrow.
But then we see a needed direction. He directs them to faith. You believe in God, you are to believe in Jesus and find comfort in Him.
Finally we see a comforting promise. "I go to prepare a place for you," and "where I am there you will be also." Because of the many promises the Lord has given us, when trouble comes we need not have a troubled heart.

"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Ephesians 5:20
In considering this text we first see the duty declared. The apostle Paul gives frequent admonitions in his writings to give thanks. There are various ways of expressing our thanks to God — in song, in prayer, by declaration, and by obedience. It's indeed an important part of Christian life to continually give thanks to God.
We then see the scope revealed. We're to give thanks for the things the Lord has done for us, for all the things He has promised, and for His daily mercies.
Finally we note the method described. We're to give thanks to the Father, acknowledging He provides for us, and its to be done in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. The only acceptable way to give thanks to the Father is through His Son Jesus Christ.
In this Thanksgiving season, may we stir our hearts to give thanks always for all things.

Welcome to the Baptist Bible Hour! Motivated by a desire for God's glory, we exist to call men and women back to the beauty and sufficiency of the Bible. As God's perfect message to every man, woman, and child, this book stands alone in its majesty throughout history and in its contemporary relevancy.

For many people, even Christians, there is a persistent and tragic disconnect between the narrative and instruction that they see in the Bible, and the problems, challenges, and opportunities that they experience in their daily lives. It is our purpose to bridge this great divide with teaching that has depth and gravity, but is at the same time accessible and relatable. To this end, for over 50 years the Baptist Bible Hour has been broadcasting the Word of God, with a particular emphasis on the sovereignty of God in personal salvation and in every detail of life.
